Their Story

Congratulations to PVT Jimmy Oakley and Marty, a 1-year-old black Lab mix who'd been found with a homeless woman on the Staten Island Ferry. The woman had been taken by police to a shelter and the dog was brought to Staten Island Animal Care & Control, where they called him "Ferris" -- inspired by his time on the boat. Ferris bonded immediately with PVT Oakley, a disabled Veteran from Bound Brook, New Jersey.

Jimmy proudly reported that Marty knows how to sit and lay down, and by 3 pm on their first day together Jimmy had already taken Marty on five walks. PVT Oakley is now feeling less anxious, and his frequent headaches have stopped.

But he mostly raves about Marty, he eats well, chews a bit, ("he's just playing") and had a blast in the snow. "He follows me everywhere - he's like my shadow."

He's sticking to me like glue," Jimmy told me the day after he brought home his dog, who he's renamed Marty. "He's happy. I'm happy.
