Reimbursed Adoption Fees

Approved Heroes have 30 days to adopt a dog and receive reimbursement of adoption fees.  Dogs adopted prior to applying for our services DO NOT receive reimbursement of adoption fees.

AKC Certified Training

All dogs receive cost-free American Kennel Club training with the Hero. Companion Dogs are certified to the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. Service Dogs are certified to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Personalized Care Package

All Heroes receive a gift bag with C4H gear as a show of appreciation for their service and to celebrate their new Companion.

Program Check-ins

Every Companion and Hero receives a minimum of six scheduled check-ins while in the program.

Filing Assistance

Assistance with filing of the Hero’s request for a Service Dog, to include identification of the Hero’s needs and the determination of the appropriateness of the request.

Types of Dogs

We Work With Two Types of Animals:

We work with heroes to train animals to be either companions or service dogs help complete tasks for heroes with disabilities.

Companion dog

  • A Well Trained House Dog

  • For any Heroes who qualify for our program

  • Companion Dog Completes AKC CGC Training Program with Hero

  • Companion Dog Learns Basic Commands

  • Companion Dogs Cannot Go Into Public Places

Do I need all documents at the time of applying?

A.

Yes, to be considered as a Hero you need all required documents at the time of applying.

Q.

Can I apply for the service dog program if I am active duty?

A.

Yes, however you will need a command sponsorship letter at the time of applying.

Do I need to show proof that I am allowed to have animals in my current living situation?

A.

Yes, your current lease has to show that you are able to have animals. This does include Heroes applying for the service dog program due to the adoption and training time required to train a service dog to meet the ADA standards.

Can I have my own dog trained?

A.

Yes, depending on the age of your dog C4H does train a Hero's current dog on a case by case basis.

Q.

Does C4H train seizure and/or diabetic alert dogs?

A.

No, at this time C4H does not train service dogs for seizures or diabetic alerts.

Does C4H cover vet bills or the cost of dog food?

A.

No, these costs are solely up to the Hero.

Q.

Can a companion dog accompany a Hero in public places?

A.

No, a companion dog is essentially a well-trained house pet and is only allowed at places where a common dog is allowed.

Do I have to adopt a dog from a shelter?

A.

Yes, the dog has to be adopted from a shelter, rescue or humane society.
